Large center columns on the tripod are often the reason for a fairly large pack size, which tends to be undesirable, especially with travel tripods. In addition, large center columns ensure movement on the camera when fully extended. Most photographers who use tripods therefore know that the center column should be extended no more than a hand’s breadth above the tripod shoulder for good stability (e.g. for long exposures).
